Finding Repentance
In chapter 34 Simeon and Levi slaughtered an entire village of men. In chapter 37 they conspired with their brothers to get rid of Joseph. The accounts of these events suggest that they got away with their crimes. But God avenges in His own time, and in his own way. While the sons of Israel were never tried and convicted for their crimes, they suffered in their conscience for what they had done. As they stood before the ruler of Egypt in chapter 42, they faced undeserved suspicion, and they immediately thought of what they had done to Joseph. Their conscience was tortured by the knowledge that they had done something terrible, that God had seen it, and that it might one day be exposed to the world. They were finally ready to repent.
